Tchicai’s Five/Six Points Plays George Wein’s Jazz Festival

John Tchicai’s Five Points became Six when the group appeared at Zebulon in Brooklyn on June 21st, as part of Geroge Wein’s Care Fusion Jazz Festival. The group’s previous recording was done in Brooklyn two years ago and released on Nubop Records (Italy). Featured performers are Tchicai on tenor and bass clarinet, Alex Weiss on tenor and alto sax, Garrison Fewell on guitar, percussion and bow, Dmitry Ishenko on bass and Ches Smith on drums. For this concert, Tchicai added violinist and vocalist Rose Hertlein. The program included collective improvisation, at times broken down into paired duets, at other times the entire band played simultaneous melodic/rhythmic cells. Compositions were by Tchicai: Afro Danish Form Six and Seven, Wooden Bridge, including tunes by Alex Weiss, Garrison Fewell and Ches Smith.
