John Tchicai’s Six Points @ The Vision Festival

John Tchicai’s Six Points – “Ascension Unending” @ The Vision Festival
Saturday, June 5th, 9:15 – 10:00 pm. Abrons Art Center (Main Stage) , 466 Grand St. NYC.

http://visionfestival.org/schedule/visionfestival16

Six Points: John Tchicai, Garrison Fewell, Alex Weiss, Rosi Hertlein, Dmitry Ishenko, Ches Smith

The ensemble paints wonderful inner landscapes, plays compositions by the group members and improvises solo’s, duo’s, trio’s etc. and continues the way of music communication initiated by John Coltrane on his momentous Ascension recordings.

John Tchicai’s Six Points is a collaborative ensemble consisting of the following six sensible musical personalities: Saxophonist/singer John Tchicai, and with sounds ready for Victoriaville and elsewhere, guitarist Garrison Fewell, along with the bass is “the base” bassist Dmitry Ishenko, totally in tune with herself violinist/singer Rosie Hertlein, exquisite drummer Ches Smith, and he who always knows when and where to place the next tone, fabulous saxophonist Alex Weiss

*********
By approaching jazz from a wide scope, Afro-Danish-American John Tchicai has been continuously progressive throughout his life. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1936, of a Danish mother and a Congolese father and growing up in healthy surroundings, John Martin Tchicai became a leading exponent of the jazz avant-garde in New York in the ’60s recording w/ John Coltrane on the 1965 Impulse lp, “Ascension” and a father-figure for the European avant-garde after that. Now based in Davis, California, and Claira, France, by a single-mindedness of purpose and action, his work still reflects what he’s always been doing, which is innovate and inspires other people, in a most refreshing way. The Danish ministry of Culture recognized his work by awarding him a lifetime grant.

Garrison Fewell / Eric Hofbauer Duo

The Garrison Fewell/Eric Hofbauer Duo are opening the guitar-themed triple bill at Johnny D’s in Somerville, Massachusetts on Wednesday, April 20th.

Known as “two of Boston’s most adventurous guitarists” (Kevin Lowenthal, Boston Globe), Fewell and Hofbauer will perform selections from their 2008 debut, The Lady of Khartoum (Creative Nation Music), as well as related improvisations.

“This freewheeling pan-cultural duo helps show that jazz’s family tree has some pretty deep roots,” writes Signal To Noise reviewer Nathan Turk.

Critics have noted the pair’s “original brand of 21st century free jazz fused with ancient world music elements” (Owen McNally, Hartford Courant), and described its work as “extraordinary” (The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings, Ninth Edition), “deft and inventive” (Brian Marley, The Wire) and “something special” (Nic Jones, AllAboutJazz.com).

Adventures in Sound (featuring slide guitarist David Tronzo) and Dave Fiucszynski’s KiF will also perform on the program, which begins at 8:00 p.m.
